CareerCorner: Is This Real Estate Marketing Idea Headed for Extinction?

Business June 6, 2017

Let’s visit real estate marketing ideas of yesteryear. Once upon a time in the land of neighbors bringing over casseroles, lemonade stands run by 5-year-olds, and before the word Kardashian was ever uttered, you could depend on your friends, family, and neighbors to help spread the word and market your real estate business.

Now, the landscape has completely changed. Or has it? You can still use your friends, family, and neighbors to help you market your real estate business, but you just need to put a system in place to help you. The old-school concept of a simple thank you can help.

The last time that someone sent you a referral, did you thank them? Did you place a thank you phone call, type a thank you text, or send an e-card? If you can’t remember the last time you received a referral, then you may know why your phone hasn’t been ringing.

You should put a simple business policy in place that states how you will handle referrals. Every time you get a referral, you perform some action. This one simple real estate marketing idea will help you to resurrect your referrals. However, there is still more you can do. Remember, we are no longer in the age of malt shops. We are in the age of Kardashians, and that means the b-word-branding.

How can you say thank you that is uniquely you and consistent with your brand? Bonus points if you can find a way to say thank you that will get other people talking about how sweet, amazing, and surprising your gesture was? The reason why this is so important is that your circle of friends, family, and neighbors talk to each other, and if they tell someone about your gesture, that person will be inclined to also try to send you a referral.

Here are the steps to making this real estate marketing idea a success:
1. Determine your brand.
2. Brainstorm thank you ideas that are consistent with your brand.
3. Choose the thank you idea you will implement.
4. Will this idea get people talking? If not, go back to step 2.
5. Implement this as your business policy/practice.
6. Inform your assistant and/or staff of the new policy and enlist them to help execute the new policy.

If you are looking at the steps above, the key step is determining your brand. That is how you get to millionaire real estate agent status. This is what is going to make you unique and stand out. The implementation should definitely get your family, friends, and neighbors talking. If this still doesn’t work, try another strategy from the Kardashians. It is three letters followed by the word tape.
